How it works

ChatGPT doesn't connect to your car directly. It connects to mytesla.io, a hosted MCP server for Tesla, as a plugin in ChatGPT's plugin directory. mytesla.io holds the authorization your Tesla granted through the official Fleet API and Vehicle Command Protocol, and relays whatever ChatGPT asks for as a signed request - the same path Tesla's own app uses.

Setup (about 3 minutes)

    Create a mytesla.io account

    Sign in at mytesla.io with a six-digit email code - no password. Start free with 100 one-time credits, no card required.

    Authorize your Tesla

    Dashboard, then Connect Tesla, then approve on Tesla's own consent screen. We show up there as “Embay, LLC” - the company behind mytesla.io. Your home region (North America or Europe) is detected automatically.

    Register a virtual key

    A one-time step per vehicle: open a link on your phone and tap Approve on the car's touchscreen or in the Tesla app. This is what lets commands be cryptographically signed.

Connecting by URL instead (fallback)

If the plugin isn't available to you (in the EEA, the UK, or Switzerland, or in a workspace whose admin hasn't enabled it), add mytesla.io as a custom connector with Developer Mode: in ChatGPT's settings, turn on Developer Mode, add a new connector, paste the URL below, and complete the sign-in popup. Developer Mode depends on your ChatGPT plan and workspace settings.

What to ask it

ChatGPT reads your car's live state for status questions rather than answering from memory, and only calls the specific tools mytesla.io exposes - there is no generic "drive" or "override safety setting" action.

ChatGPT or Claude?

The ChatGPT plugin works on the Free plan outside the EEA, the UK, and Switzerland; where it isn't available, OpenAI limits custom connectors to Developer Mode. That is an OpenAI product decision, not something specific to Tesla or mytesla.io. Either way, Claude gets you the identical set of Tesla tools, and its connector setup works on the free web app and Claude Desktop. Your mytesla.io account is the same either way; many people connect both.
